How to See a Specialist Doctor in Malta
There are two broad pathways - and one sensible starting point if you are unsure.
Public specialist care
- Often accessed following referral by a GP or another doctor
- Appointments prioritised clinically
- Free for those entitled
Private specialist care
- A patient may sometimes book directly, depending on the specialist/provider
- Some require a referral letter
- Fees or insurance apply
Not sure who you need?
These examples show the role of primary care - they are not diagnoses.
Persistent skin problem→ A GP can assess whether dermatology is appropriate.
Long-lasting joint pain→ A GP may assess and determine whether physiotherapy, orthopaedics or another pathway is appropriate.
Ongoing abdominal symptoms→ A GP can assess and decide whether investigations or specialist referral are needed.
Recurring headaches→ GP assessment can help determine appropriate next steps.
