Hospitals and Specialist Care in Malta
Malta’s public hospitals provide emergency medicine, inpatient treatment, specialist outpatient services, diagnostics and surgery.
Mater Dei Hospital
Malta’s main acute general teaching hospital, providing extensive hospital and specialist services, including the main emergency department. The emergency department is designed for urgent and emergency conditions - patients with ordinary minor illness are usually better served by a GP.
Karin Grech Hospital
Provides rehabilitation and specialised care, supporting patients’ recovery after acute illness or surgery.
Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre
Malta’s specialist centre for oncology and haemato-oncology (cancer and blood cancer) care.
Mount Carmel Hospital
Malta’s specialist mental-health hospital.
Gozo General Hospital
Provides hospital services for Gozo, including emergency care.
Private hospitals and specialists
Malta also has private hospitals, clinics and specialists, usually paid directly or through private health or travel insurance. Neither public nor private care is universally better.
Do not go to A&E for minor illness
Emergency departments triage by urgency. For colds, mild rashes or medicine questions, a GP, pharmacy or online doctor is usually more appropriate. For life-threatening emergencies, call 112.
